Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa unveiled the new passport booklet at a launch event in Accra, demonstrating its advanced security features. The e-passport contains a microprocessor chip storing the holder’s biometric data, linked to the National Identification Authority database for enhanced verification.
“This represents a quantum leap in document security,” Ablakwa stated. “We’ve increased security features from 32 to over 150, incorporating nanotechnology in the protective overlays and micro frequency identification that meets strict ICAO standards.”
The reforms specifically target long-standing frustrations with Ghana’s passport system, including:
Elimination of delays caused by middlemen (“goro boys”)
Complete digitization of the application process
Transparent tracking from submission to delivery
