Ghana Launches Revolutionary E-Passport with 24-Hour Processing & 30% Fee Reduction

Accra, April 28 – Ghana has ushered in a new era of passport services with sweeping reforms announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration. The changes, which take immediate effect, introduce cutting-edge e-passport technology, dramatically reduced processing times, and significant cost savings for applicants.

Key Reforms Include:

  • Chip-embedded e-passports with enhanced biometric security features

  • 24-hour expedited processing service for urgent applications

  • Door-to-door courier delivery nationwide

  • New electronic tracking system for applications

  • 30% reduction in passport application fees

  • Processing time slashed from weeks to just 15 days on average

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa unveiled the new passport booklet at a launch event in Accra, demonstrating its advanced security features. The e-passport contains a microprocessor chip storing the holder’s biometric data, linked to the National Identification Authority database for enhanced verification.

“This represents a quantum leap in document security,” Ablakwa stated. “We’ve increased security features from 32 to over 150, incorporating nanotechnology in the protective overlays and micro frequency identification that meets strict ICAO standards.”

The reforms specifically target long-standing frustrations with Ghana’s passport system, including:

  • Elimination of delays caused by middlemen (“goro boys”)

  • Complete digitization of the application process

  • Transparent tracking from submission to delivery

How It Works:

  1. Applicants complete the process online

  2. Biometric data is cross-checked with the national ID database

  3. New e-passports feature:

    • Embedded microchip with holder’s information

    • Multiple anti-fraud measures

    • Machine-readable technology for faster border processing

The ministry projects these changes will:
✓ Reduce passport fraud
✓ Speed up border crossings
✓ Improve overall national security
✓ Make the process more affordable and accessible

“Ghanaian travelers deserve world-class documents with world-class service,” Ablakwa emphasized. “These reforms deliver on that promise while positioning Ghana at the forefront of digital identity innovation in Africa.”

The new system is operational immediately at all passport offices nationwide, with the ministry encouraging citizens to take advantage of the reduced fees and faster processing times. Online applications can be submitted through the official passport portal.
